I grew up in Detroit, oblivious to the problems of the auto industry, political scandals, and the mess in my bedroom. I sometimes played in our backyard, creating circus performances with friends or industriously digging a hole to China (I never made it. My dream of trans-globe travel via tunnel ended the day I saw horns poking through the dirt and ran screaming, convinced I'd reached hell).
Most often I had my nose in a book, lost in the magic of a good story. I solved crimes with Trixie Belden, rode the Black Stallion to victory, and cried copious tears when Rhett frankly didn’t give a damn.
I eventually discovered that real life holds its own magic. I attended the University of Michigan, found true love, started a family and obtained a graduate degree in social work. When my youngest son began kindergarten, I put a “Do Not Disturb” sign on a small room I designated as my office – a sign largely ignored by all - and began to peck out my first novel.
The youngest son is currently in college. Yes, that happened quickly! In between now and then, I wrote several novels, won the Romance Writers of America Golden Heart competition in Romantic Suspense and was a finalist in the American Title Competition with a paranormal romance. When I’m not at work, I most often have my nose in my laptop, lost in the magic of writing.
I now pay attention to the ups and downs of the auto industry, occasionally allow politics to drive me crazy, and keep a fairly clean bedroom. And while those early backyard performances proved good practice for a life that sometimes feels like a circus, I absolutely, positively never dig a hole deeper than a rootball—and any travel to China will be via plane.
